Pretty, Polished, Perfect.: The Romantics

The Romantics

I am such a romantic.  At least I think I am.  I love old movies, black white or color, Cary Grant, Gene Kelly or Audrey Hepburn.  I love the old James Bond movies too.  No one, and I mean no one, has been able to replicate Sean Connery as the ultimate "shaken, not stirred" martini-drinking epitome of 110% male testosterone.  Doris Day and Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk? Yes, please.  And the singing.  I am such a sucker for singing!  It's the reason I love musicals and theater and opera.  Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.....I dream of dancing like that one day!  Remember my last opera skirt?  I have found yet another perfect one (and now it's 50% off!)

I did mention my love for all things vintage, right?  What kind of lover would I be if I didn't have a classic vintage cruiser bicycle??

I love grosgrain ribbon.  I seriously have a spool in every color.  It's perfect for so many things, wrapping gifts, bracelets, belts, hair accessories, handbag accessories......did I mention how cheap it is??

Just another example of sentimentality, my parents brought this necklace home from them on a trip to England.  Yes, it's an English pound.  And I love it.  Mostly because it's from my parents ;)

Top: JCrew
Jacket: Old Navy
Necklaces: c/o The Parents, George
Belt: Hobby Lobby
Ring: c/o The Mr. (he likes to give me jewelry, what can I say?)
Skirt: JCrew
Shoes: George
Bicycle: Walmart
Photographer: Aurelia Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Babysitter: Jubal

At the beginning of this post, I mentioned that I'm a romantic at heart (no pun intended, really.)  I love vintage movies - anyone remember the opening credits for the sitcom The Wonder Years?  That old 8mm film that didn't record sound, and the colors are so "vintagey?"  I love that.  If I could have recorded all my films like that, I would have.  But I haven't and I probably never will.  But, because I love the 8mm, here is my technologically enhanced "8mm-feeling" short film, dedicated to Irving Berlin (a favorite composer from several Fred Astaire movies):

(it's a very short film, I promise!  And music - so turn your volume up or down.....)

If you're interested, here are a few of my recommendations:

Films:

Pillow Talk
To Catch A Thief
North By Northwest
Thoroughly Modern Millie
Pirates of Penzance (with Angela Lansbury, only the film with Angela Lansbury!)
Top Hat......the list could go on.

Theater:

Pirates Of Penzance
Movin' Out
Phantom of the Opera
Wicked
Fantasticks
Carmen
Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker
The Marriage of Figaro.....the list could go on

Watch the films and get back to me, ok?

What a wonderful video and combination of elements in this outfit. I like the new skirt. Lately, my Netflix queue has skewed toward a lot of these classics.

Thanks! I wasn't too sure about the colors at first, but somehow they appealed to me! I think I have every classic old movie in my Netflix queue - I don't think I will ever be able to see them all!

Pillow Talk is one of my all time favourites! I've been going through Netflix trying to watch as many classics as possible lately. Just watched How to Marry a Millionaire, which I loved, mostly because I identify with Marilyn Monroe's character and how she is blind without her glasses.

Glad I found your blog!

Pillow Talk is also one of my favourites! I've been going through Netflix watching a lot of classics lately. How to Marry a Millionaire is also great. I love it partially due to the fact that I identify with Marilyn Monroe's character and how she is blind without her glasses.

Glad I found your blog through FBFF!

Hi! Nice to meet you :) I am a firm believer in short videos. IFB tweeted something about keeping it under 2 and a half minutes, but my personal standard is under 30 seconds. It's about all I have time for, lol!

I totally have that bike! I love it! Great outfit! I happen to LOVE grosgrain ribbon too! Do you seal the ends or no?

At July 11, 2011 at 12:09 PM , Anonymous Erin said...

I don't bother sealing them. They never unravel, and seeing as how I bought the whole spool, I'll just cute myself another belt if I need to. I also have no idea how to seal them.....

I have done a similar post on my love of old movies. Hearing about a book Cary Grant's daughter wrote about Cary Grant inspired the post. Your outfit with this bike is absolute perfection.
